Hotel 1904 – Art Nouveau in Ålesund, Norway

Hotel 1904 in Ålesund, Norway, is a striking example of the city's rich Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) heritage, built during the early 20th century reconstruction period following the devastating 1904 fire. It's architectural character blends the elegance of Art Nouveau with the influence of Nordic historicism.

The façade is symmetrical yet lively, with tall, narrow arched windows that emphasize verticality. The upper floors are painted in a deep earthy tone, contrasted by the crisp white of the ground level, creating visual depth. The ground-floor windows and main entrance feature finely crafted wooden frames with delicate muntin patterns, evoking a warm and artisanal feel typical of Scandinavian Art Nouveau. The grand central entrance is framed by a rounded arch with detailed stonework, including a sculpted keystone face—an ornamental flourish often seen in the style.

Above, the façade is animated by a stepped gable with small arched openings, lending a distinctive silhouette against the sky. The central balcony features decorative wrought-iron railings, another hallmark of the period’s craftsmanship. The two corner towers, topped with pointed spires and finials, add a picturesque, almost fairy-tale quality that blends Jugendstil’s romanticism with elements of late 19th-century eclecticism.
