Casa Courret: Art Nouveau Elegance on Jirón de la Unión

Located along the vibrant Jirón de la Unión, Casa Courret is one of the most striking examples of Art Nouveau architecture in Lima. The building reflects the elegance and artistic ambition of the early 20th century, when European design influences reached the Peruvian capital.

The façade is richly decorated and immediately eye-catching, defined by its ornate sculptural ornament and flowing, organic forms. Two prominent projecting bays feature curved balconies with wrought-iron railings, supported by elaborate, almost theatrical plasterwork that appears to cascade downward in fluid, plant-like shapes. Above, the building’s upper levels display arched openings and intricate stucco detailing, with decorative motifs that blend floral patterns and stylized forms. The central section is particularly notable for its highly sculpted cartouche-like element, adding depth and dramatic emphasis to the composition. The façade is further enhanced by delicate inscriptions and ornamental flourishes, linking the building to its original commercial purpose.
