At 40 Algatan, on Trelleborg's historic main thoroughfare in Skåne County, stands a striking example of Jugendstil, the Swedish and broader Scandinavian expression of the Art Nouveau movement. Algatan itself is one of the oldest streets in Trelleborg, its name tracing back to the medieval period, and this building's ornate presence reflects the prosperity and architectural ambition that transformed the city's center around the turn of the 20th century. A carved inscription above the entrance arch bears the date 1906, anchoring the building firmly within the high tide of the Jugendstil movement in Sweden.

The building's most distinctive feature is its dramatic stepped gable, crowned with a small sculptural figure silhouetted against the sky, a hallmark of the eclectic, ornamented style favored in Swedish architecture of this era. Below the gable, the façade is rendered in pale brick banded with warm terracotta-colored stone, creating a rhythmic contrast across the building's full height. A rounded corner turret with a domed, greenish copper roof anchors one end of the structure, while wrought-iron balconies with sweeping, organic curves project from the upper floors, a detail strongly characteristic of Art Nouveau's embrace of flowing, plant-inspired metalwork.

At street level, the building reveals its richest ornamentation. Above the main entrance arch is a richly carved stone panel featuring dense floral and foliate motifs. Just beyond it, a sculpted relief depicting a face emerges above a row of arched windows, another decorative flourish typical of the period's fondness for allegorical and naturalistic detail. The repeated arched window forms across all three main stories of the building, with their radiating stone surrounds, lend the entire façade a sense of rhythm and verticality, breaking from the strict symmetry of earlier historicist styles.

Today, the building's ground floor houses local businesses, while its upper floors continue to anchor one of Trelleborg's most architecturally distinctive corners.
